CVAA - Services
Senior HelpLine (800) 642-5119

The Senior HelpLine is an information and assistance resource for people age 60 and older.

The CVAA Senior HelpLine provides information on a wide range of programs and services available to seniors. The HelpLine is staffed by professionals with extensive knowledge of what is available to assist seniors with the issues they face.

We welcome calls from seniors, family members, health professionals, or anyone concerned about a senior. We will:

  • Answer your questions when you call
  • Refer you to an agency which can help
  • Or connect you with a Case Manager who can provide you with more in-depth assistance

The following are examples of situations we encounter with seniors and how we can help.

A man, soon to turn 65, calls to find out how he can get his Social Security benefits, Medicare benefits, and other programs and services.

We:

  • Explain how to sign up for these benefits
  • Discuss Medicare supplemental insurance or Medicaid, and other benefit programs
  • Set up a meeting with our health insurance specialist if he needs in-depth assistance with health insurance issues and/or
  • Refer him to a CVAA Case Manager, who can meet with him in person to help with any paperwork or provide assistance in resolving other issues

A daughter, living out of state, calls concerned about her parents' increased prescription drug costs.

We explain the options available:

  • Private insurance coverage
  • State of Vermont prescription drug assistance programs
  • Prescriptions available through mail order and the internet
  • Lower cost prescriptions available in Canada

A spouse calls looking for respite. He is the primary caregiver for his wife, who has dementia and is unable to do much for herself. She cannot be left alone because she is disoriented and wanders. He must help her with personal care, supervise her constantly, and do all the housework and shopping.

We can:

  • Help him find both short and long-term respite, as well as help with daily home maintenance and
  • Match him with a CVAA Case Manager to monitor the situation to ensure that services continue to match their needs

A hospital social worker calls to order Meals On Wheels for a patient soon to be released from the hospital.

We explain the meals program:

  • The options for special meals
  • The schedule of meal delivery, and
  • Take an order for meals right on the telephone
