Question: I’m having a hard time paying for my
groceries and am looking for resources
to extend my food budget. Are there
any programs that could help me?
Answer: The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a USDA nutrition program. Each month, income-eligible Vermonters 60 and over can pick up a box of nutritious foods like canned fruit and veggies, fruit juices, cereals, and cheese. Each box includes product information, packaging and storage tips, nutrition facts, and suggested recipes. The Vermont Foodbank warehouses, packs, and delivers the commodities every month to distribution sites all across Vermont. A proxy can be assigned to pick up the box if you are not able to pick up the box yourself.
Other sources of food help include:
Food Stamps:
The Food Stamp program provides financially eligible seniors with money that can be used to purchase groceries. If you have high housing or medical costs, you may qualify for additional benefits and receiving Food Stamps can help you to qualify for other benefits, such as Fuel Assistance.
For more information about Food Stamps, go to http://www.vermontfoodhelp.com or call the Senior HelpLine.
Farmers Market Coupons:
During the growing season, coupons are available to eligible seniors through local Community Action agencies to purchase fresh produce at local farmers markets.
