Living Strong is a program originally developed by researchers at Tufts University to help older adults maintain their independence by increasing strength, muscle mass and bone density.

Balance exercises enhance agility and decrease the likelihood of falls: flexibility exercises are performed to enhance joint mobility and reduce the risk of injury. This is particularly effective for osteo-arthritis sufferers who will benefit from increased pain-free range of motion. If you have ever fallen and had difficulty getting up, or you worry about injury from falls, please consider this program.

Weight bearing exercises are done seated or standing with the use of a chair or wall for support. Classes meet 2 times a week for 12 weeks in community locations throughout Chittenden County. All participants are required to obtain a "Medical Clearance for Exercise", from their primary care physicians.
Past participants' report increased strength, flexibility and mobility. They also cite improvements in mood. "I have much more energy and generally feel happier. I enjoy laughing with the group," says one woman. "I get up and down the stairs easily now, and I'm less afraid of falling," says her friend. "I have arthritis in both knees, now my joints are much more flexible. I sleep better."
New classes are being offered at the following locations in late September or early October. Class size is limited so please call early. Classes are open to all age 50 and over. For information on these and additional fitness programs for seniors, call Mary West at CVAA 865-0360.
